Here's our No Throw Guide - so you can avoid contributing to the very, very large amount of waste that goes to landfill each year. Also check out our Sustainability Advice section.
First things first - can you fix it? Search online for someone who might be able to repair it or replace a part to stretch out its life.
If not, that doesn't mean it has to go to landfill. Here's a directory of stuff that can go elsewhere.
We do what we can to keep it up-to-date, but if you've got something to add or there's out of date information, please let us know! Email email@example.com.
If it's not listed here, try Wellington City Council's recycling directory to see if it can be recycled, or if you'd like to give it away for further use, try op shops, Freecycle or Kiwi Community Assistance.
We support local charity ReBicycle, who refurbish bikes and gift them to families who wouldn’t usually have the money for one. Bring your bikes to our EcoCentre, Forresters Lane (off Tory St), Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm and we'll get them to ReBicycle.
Bring us your curtains! Wellington Curtain Bank upcyle good quality curtains and provide them free to low-income families. They must be in good condition, in particular mould-free. We also take tracks and hooks, but cannot take rods and blinds. You can bring them to us at our EcoCentre, Forresters Lane (off Tory St), Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm. We also have partners who take curtains for us, find out more on Donate curtains page.
We're a drop-off point for good quality used children's clothing that you'd like Gurgl to have. Gurgl are a library for children's clothing - reducing, reusing and recycling! More about Gurgl here, or just bring us your donations, EcoCentre, Forresters Lane (off Tory St), Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm.
In partnership with Seat Smart, we take expired and damaged children’s car seats. It’s $10 per seat to cover costs. More info about we can and can’t be taken on the Seat Smart website. You can bring them to us at our EcoCentre, Forresters Lane (off Tory St), Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm.
If it once whirred and buzzed, we can probably take it. From laptops to vacuum cleaners to batteries, we can take it, and get it to a partner to dispose of responsibly, repurpose or recycle. There is a cost for recycling it which covers our costs. You can bring it to us at our EcoCentre, Forresters Lane (off Tory St), Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm. More here.
Set up a compost or worm farm system. More info over our Sustainability advice section, or get started in our EcoShop. If you don't have room for composting, research community garden composts, urban compost services or a Bokashi. If you're a business that has a lot of surplus food that could be redistributed, try Kaibosh or Kiwi Community Assistance.
