Trust wins national award

Published 18 November 2016

We're very pleased to announce that Sustainability Trust has been recognised for its community impact in the national NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.

The Trust won the Airbnb Community Impact Award for its work supporting families to create healthier, more energy-efficient homes, helping schools and businesses to reduce their carbon footprints and empowering communities to live more sustainably.

The NZI Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Awards, now in their 14th year, recognise businesses and individuals transforming New Zealand into a more sustainable nation.

The Community Impact Award recognises initiatives, products or services that address a social need or invest in human resources or communities. Judges said the Trust put in an outstanding entry which clearly identified its impact.

“The judges congratulate Sustainability Trust’s very real impact, and the inspiration it provides through driving real outcomes in the community.” In the last financial year, Sustainability Trust delivered:

  • 1874 sets of lined curtains for 502 low-income homes

  • 190 housing assessments for families experiencing housing-related health issues – 65 per cent of families reported improved health after the interventions

  • 54 sustainability workshops to 1922 people

  • 17 waste audits for businesses and schools who wanted to reduce their waste to landfill

The Trust was in good company, being recognised alongside the likes of former Oxfam chief executive Barry Coates, the Better NZ Trust, Ecotricity, Ceres Organics, Air New Zealand, NZ Bus, Kiwi Experience and Ekos.

“It’s incredibly heartening to be sitting alongside people who are leading by example on sustainability, both grassroots projects like the Good Neighbour Trust and big players like Air New Zealand,” says Sustainability Trust chief executive Phil Squire.

“We’ve all got a part of play in making New Zealand a more sustainable nation and the issues we seek to address have never been more urgent.”

Squire says the team feels honoured and proud of the award.

“It’s an award that recognises our hard-working staff, the time and energy of our volunteers, the expertise of our board, the goodwill of our community partners and the generosity of our funders.

“It’s also good motivation to keep on doing everything we can to address climate change impacts locally.” For the list of winners and commendations for the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards go to: sustainable.org.nz/awards.
