Wilderworld: Urban Nature Explorers
Wilderworld: Urban Nature Explorers
It’s a big wide wilderworld out there. Lots to see, even more to explore. Have a poke around outside, you’ll be surprised at how many creatures you can find in your neighbourhood if you look closely.
Can you name them and can you draw them? Draw what you find in the booklet we’ll show you how to make.
You’ll be surprised by how many there are!
Make your own special booklet and fill it with drawings of your discoveries.
To make your booklet, you will need:
Cardboard
Paper
String
Scissors
Hole punch if you have one
Tip: Be a recycling hero and use cardboard and paper from your recycling bin - it just needs to be clear on one side so that you can draw.
Step 1. Cut 2 equal size squares of cardboard
Step 2. Cut some paper squares the same size. You can cut as many as you like - these are the pages of your book!
Step 3. Punch 2 holes through the cardboard and paper. You can use a hole punch to do this if you have one, but if not then ask an adult to help you carefully make the holes with the tip of the scissors. Be careful - they’re very sharp.
Step 4. Loop two pieces of string through the holes and tie them on the side.
Step 5. Decorate your booklet how you like to make it all yours. You could draw your favourite animal on the front or stick on some beautiful autumn leaves that you collect outside. Remember to write your name on it so everyone knows it’s yours.
Now that our booklet is ready… it’s time to go exploring!
Take your book and a pencil outside with you in your garden, or down your street with an adult. You’ll need to be quiet and sneaky so you don’t scare the critters away… ssshhh!
Go slowly and look all around you - what can you see and hear? Small creatures like to hide so be sure to check under leaves and rocks.
Carefully draw in your booklet each of the creatures that you see.
🏠 When you get home, colour in your drawings as realistically as you can.
❔ Can you name the different creatures?
🐤 If it’s a bird, could it be a tui or a sparrow?
🐝 Could that be a buzzy bumblebee or a honey bee?
🐛 Is that a colourful caterpillar or a wriggly worm I see?
Describe and show the creatures that you’ve seen on your adventures to the people in your bubble - they’ll be amazed at all of the things you’ve found!
