EightyOne
EightyOne: not an age and much more than a number.
“Where data and creative meet. We start with good data. We add smart creative. We change the world“
As you can imagine, after reading this on EightyOne’s website we began fantasising about what their office looked like.
We envisioned a bar, an office dog, hardwood floors, an eclectic mix of mismatched furniture complete with a hammock. And you know what? We weren’t far off.. But we missed the part where they had a gym.
EightyOne is much more than just a progressive creative agency filled with good-looking folk with phresh haircuts, they’re a company that really cares about the important stuff - staff wellbeing and taking care of Papatūānuku.
Carlos, a head honcho, avid snowboarder, champion of detail and all-round cool guy reached out to us in early 2018. A man with many visions, he was hungry to take what they’d already done to the next level.
Our initial site visit saw handmade notebooks made from unwanted but completely reusable paper on desks and custom-made waste stations at the end of benches. From the get-go, we knew we didn’t have to explain why sustainability was important because they already knew.
Like many of the organisations we work with, EightyOne had already had a go at implementing sustainability in their workplace. But like many of the organisations we work with, they’d hit a snag and couldn’t shake it.
Off the back of our onsite assessment, report and recommendations, EightyOne went on to roll out a variety of changes in their office, including: installing waste stations throughout the office to separate five different waste streams, including a newly implemented compost collection, as well as providing staff with keep cups and reusable water bottles. Staff also received an onsite education session to help them understand why these changes are important for the planet and the business, and how best to implement them.
The biggest change [we saw] following the implementation of the programme was proactivity and awareness - it naturally starts people thinking about other aspects that can be changed like takeaway containers, coffee cups etc.
Following their reassessment in July 2018, their waste culture grading jumped from ‘C+’ up to ‘A-’, with an estimated 18.5 tonnes of their waste being diverted from the landfill annually. EightyOne continued their good work following completion of the programme and went on to offset their carbon emissions, join the Sustainable Business Network, and change to a more sustainable energy supplier.
They also built a cool-as stand for their Keep Cups so there really is no excuse for using single-use cups.
