Wellington Curtain Bank
We upcycle pre-loved curtains and provide them to low-income families and individuals in the Wellington Region.
Double-layered curtains are effective at reducing heat loss. They keep the home warm and help to reduce energy bills. We know that many families, especially those living in rental properties cannot afford to buy quality curtains. That’s where we come in.
If you have a Community Services Card or a SuperGold Combo Cardholder living under your roof, or if you live in an area that is classified as a deprivation 8, 9 or 10 zone, we may be able to give you free, double-layered curtains.
Curtain Call
Every year, tens of thousands of New Zealanders are hospitalised with conditions exacerbated by cold, damp housing.
Recently amended laws mean rental housing must be adequately insulated, and a source of heat provided by the owner. They however don’t address perhaps the biggest source of heat loss – windows. The solution, in part, is deceptively simple: the humble curtain.
Curtain Call brings together a number of not-for-profit organisations with strong connections in community and child health.
Curtain Call hopes to make New Zealanders more aware of best-practice window coverings, and implores the government to include thermally-insulating window coverings within the minimum rental standards.

The Curtain Bank could not run without the support, mahi and encouragement of the volunteers who come into the workroom every week. It seems nothing can adequately express just how lucky we are to have such a great team, and that without them, Juliet and Amanda would end up buried beneath a three-ton pile of donated curtains! Or is there?
We’ve just installed the first AC Thundergrid EV charger in Wellington CBD. Learn how you can charge up your car and support the amazing work of the Wellington Curtain Bank at the same time.
Happy Birthday to the Wellington Curtain Bank. Here’s to a decade of being awesome. You can check out the journey here.
Last financial year, we provided the highest number of free, lined curtains ever to families with Community Services Cards. To be exact, we gave 2462 sets of curtains to 604 households! This year we want to reach even more!
Today someone slashed the tyres on our community van. This comes a week before the Wellington Curtain Bank opens its doors for another year of providing FREE curtains to families that need them.
This is how they deliver them.

Whether you rent, flat, or own your own house, there are lots of ways you can make your home more efficient, healthier, and cheaper to run. Efficient resource use is good for you, good for your wallet, and great for the planet.
Without our Curtain Bank volunteers, 604 low-income families in need across the Wellington region would not have quality curtains to keep them warm each winter.
Wellington Curtain Bank is asking for the community’s support to meet the demand for curtains for low-income homes this winter.
Wellington Curtain Bank is coming to Pomare Taita, making it easier for the community to get free, lined curtains ahead of winter. The Curtain Bank, supported by Sustainability Trust, provides free curtains for people with Community Services Cards who need a hand warming up their homes.
Thank you to our sponsors. We couldn’t do this without you.
