Save Energy

Energy is not just about electricity. In business, energy use also involves your car fleet and transportation. Carpooling and encouraging public transport use are ways of reducing car use by employees. There are some very simple, small things that employees can do that will reduce their business's energy use.

Ideas to get started:

1. Be energy efficient with your lighting.

Lighting uses between 30% and 50% of the energy in offices.

Take advantage of natural daylight, switch off unnecessary lights, keep light fixtures clean, replace inefficient lighting with energy saving light bulbs, use timers and sensors where appropriate and identify where lighting could be used more precisely ie; don't light up the whole office if it's only for one work station.

Office lighting costs around $7 to $10 per square metre. By acting on these tips you could reduce this to $5 to $6 per square metre.

2. Be energy wise with your heating.

Set heating controls no higher than 19 degrees.

For every 1 degree increase in temperature above this - there is an 8% increase in energy consumption.

Make sure that your heating and air conditioning are not cancelling each other out.

3. Turn off computers when not in use.

Turning off computers at night will give your computer greater longevity and save energy.

Turn off monitors if away from the computer - screen savers do not save power.

Doing this could save you up to $100 per PC, per year.

Or use laptop computers, as they use 70-90% less energy than desktop computers.

4. Energy efficient transport.

Our cities are becoming more and more clogged with rush hour traffic. Your business could set up a carpool or organise no-interest loans for employees to buy bus or train passes which are much cheaper than single or weekly tickets.

5. Working from home.

If possible, employees can work from home, this cuts down on overheads for your business and car or public transport costs for the employee.
